    The personal benefits of volunteering

    Have you ever wondered if adults gain anything from 4-H? Dr. Jennifer Skuza shares findings from our recent survey of 4-H volunteers. It's not just youth who benefit from 4-H participation.

    Extension Development and Minnesota 4-H award 15 scholarships

    Congratulations to the 2019 Minnesota 4-H scholarship recipients! These fifteen outstanding 4-H youth and alumni across Minnesota stood out among over 120 individuals who submitted applications.

    Keep youth safe – have emergency plans in place

    Planning in advance to be prepared for a variety of 4-H activities is an important key to keeping all participants safe. Utilize the “keeping youth safe” website for resources and information, and make sure to develop and have in place an emergency plan for all 4-H programs, activities and outings.

    Follow the medication policy and procedures

    4-H medication policy and procedures are designed to help keep all youth safe. Utilize the information sheet to understand the policy and how it works. Complete an authorization form before day or overnight activities occur when a parent/guardian is not present.

    Utilize Cloverbud policies and practices when planning programs

    The 4-H Cloverbud program supports the positive development of kindergarten – 2nd grade 4-H members. This requires safety measures, policies and rules that are age appropriate. A resource for parents, guardians and mentors provides information needed to plan safe and age appropriate programs and activities for this age group.

    Take advantage of this great 4-H video-making opportunity!

    4-H members in grades 6-12 who are interested in learning how to make a video or learning more about videography are invited to attend a 4-H video discovery project at the Minnesota State Fair Aug. 21-25.

    Register for 2019 State Arts-In!

    All youth currently in grade nine - one year post high school are invited to participate in a 22 day theater arts/leadership/team building experience at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. The 2019 Arts-In experience begins Aug. 8.

    How to talk with youth about violence

    Acts of violence are all around us. As caring adults, how do we help youth to process tragedy and maintain a sense of safety? Dr. Jennifer A. Skuza offers suggestions.

    Congratulations 2019 Helping Hands Grant recipients!

    Extension Development and Minnesota 4-H are happy to announce the 2019 Helping Hands Grant recipients. Of the 31 applications we received, 24 projects totaling $30,300 were awarded to 4-H clubs from 16 counties across the state.

    Use the keeping youth safe Google site when planning 4-H activities

    Minnesota 4-H Volunteers - utilize the “keeping youth safe” risk management planning tool, policies and practices to help keep youth safe when participating in 4-H programs, activities and events.

    Plan ahead to reduce risk when serving food to the public

    4-H clubs, federations and councils serve and/or sell food to the public in a variety of ways. Follow best practices to minimize risk to the public involving food.

    Keep your 4-H teams safe

    Before 4-H teams gather, make sure all youth are enrolled and at least two Minnesota 4-H volunteers are designated to lead the team.

    Learn more about the Science of Animals Project area and zoonotic diseases

    A great new video and evaluation sheet are available to assist you in your Science of Animals Project exploration. Again this year, Science of Animals projects focused on zoonotic diseases will receive additional premiums at the state fair!

    Take part in the Great Neighbor Photo Contest

    Tractor Supply Company has launched its Great Neighbor Photo Contest! Submit a photo showing how you have made a positive impact on your community by June 16. Winners will be recognized at a special ceremony during the Minnesota State Fair.

    Attend statewide one-day livestock trainings

    Minnesota 4-H is offering 4-H livestock day camps at five different locations in June. The trainings will focus on youth grade 6 and up, but younger members will be welcome if they bring a parent or adult chaperone. Event and registration due dates vary by location.

    YELLO Conference

    Youth Exploring Leadership and Learning Outloud! (YELLO!) is an exciting and fun 4-H civic engagement and leadership conference that engages youth in activities to prepare them to learn and lead in their communities.

    Federation Meeting

    Polk County 4-H Federation meeting will be held on Thursday, May 2 at 6:30 pm at the Valley Technology Park in Crookston (North of UMC).

    Congratulations to Polk County Livestock

    From the moment Catie Erickson found out she won a lamb through the Aksarben, she was on a mission. Catie figured it was a waste to pull an empty trailer when it could instead be filled with donated supplies for the flood victims of Nebraska. Catie took this idea to the livestock group and everyone was on board. Donations from all over Minnesota along with North Dakota, South Dakota, Maryland, North Carolina, and New York come pouring in.

    Congratulations to Eliza Meyer

    On April 5-11, more than 230 youth from 46 delegations across the United States, United States territories, and Canada participated in the National 4-H Conference at the National 4-H Conference Center near Washington, DC. The conference engages youth in developing a briefing to a federal agency on an issue of interest for both the youth and the agency.

    What’s your spark?

    A spark is very special. Read Jennifer Skuza’s reflections on why finding your spark, and encouraging its discovery in our youth, is one of the best ways a 4-H volunteer can spend their time.

    2019 animal science lease information is now available

    Minnesota 4-H allows the leasing of animal science projects to ensure that all members have the opportunity to experience the showing of livestock projects. Animal science lease information has been updated for 2019 and is available on our website.

    Livestock Quality Assurance and Ethics Training (LQA&E)

    All youth participating as a State Fair 4-H livestock exhibitor in beef, dairy, sheep, swine, poultry, rabbits, meat goat, dairy goat, and lama must have completed a livestock quality assurance training.
