Apple Growing Workshop at Sapsucker Farms near Mora, MN

Annie Klodd, University of Minnesota Extension Educator for Fruits and Vegetables, will present an Apple Growing Workshop on Saturday, September 14 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at Sapsucker Farms, 2752 – 215th Ave, Mora, MN 55051 (located between Mora and Hinckley).  Klodd will discuss:

  • Site selection and preparation
  • Varieties
  • Rootstock and sources
  • Planting and spacing
  • Tree maintenance 
  • Thinning
  • Pruning
  • Pest management
  • Winter protection.

The first two hours will be in Sapsucker Farm’s new cider barn and the last hour in their 80 variety USDA certified organic orchard. There will be apple sampling and the Kanabec and Pine County Master Gardeners will have gardening information.

Activities for children of attendees (ages 6 and up) will include: apple pressing and tasting, a scavenger hunt, orchard and hoop house tours and hands-on gardening activities.

It is sponsored by the Kanabec County Extension Committee and Kanabec County Master Gardeners.

There is no fee, but a free-willing offering will be appreciated to help cover the cost of refreshments, handouts and speaker.
