Build a Rube Goldberg-type machine

Engineering Design Challenge logo

Minnesota 4-H is committed to continuing to provide opportunities for youth to engage in hands-on education. Due to COVID-19 distancing requirements, the Minnesota 4-H STEM program is offering some new options for the creation of Rube Goldberg-type machines as part of the Engineering Design Challenge.

Team option

For those youth that still wish to create a Rube Goldberg-type machine as a team, we suggest coaches help teams connect virtually to discuss plans and then each team member create and record steps at their house.

Family option

For youth who aren't participating as a team to build a Rube Goldberg-type machine, we have created this new opportunity to participate as a family.

Resources for all participants

  • Marsbound - This activity provides youth with the experience of designing a mission to Mars, from deciding on a scientific question they want to answer, to determining what technological designs they need, to working within constraints.
  • Science and engineering practices for Engineering Design Challenge teams - This document contains ideas on how to make sure building a Rube Goldberg-type machine is a great learning experience.

Launch webinar coming soon
