It's time to register for the 4-H Agronomy Crop Scouting event

Youth in grades 7-12 are invited to gather a team for the first ever 4-H Crop Scouting Event in Minnesota!

The event will be held on Monday, July 29 from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm at test plot site south of Benson.  It is geared for teams of three to five members (who have completed 7th-12th grade) and two adult coaches. There is no cost for 4-H and FFA teams to attend. Talk to your county 4-H Program Coordinator to find out how to set up your team or to find teammates.  Team registrations are currently being accepted online at Get your team together and sign up today before the registration deadline on June 1st!

Crop scouting is a very simple concept.  It is just carefully examining fields on a regular basis for potential issues.  That also typically involves quantifying the problem to determine if the issue is severe enough to warrant action. Some crop scouts look for all issues including abiotic disorders (nutrient deficiency, herbicide damage etc), weeds, insect pests and diseases. Check out the information sheet for more details.Teams will be evaluated on their knowledge of: Corn Growth, Soybean Growth, Insects, Forages, Sprayer Nozzles, Small Grains, Plant Diseases. During the competition, youth will have the opportunity to interact with University faculty, staff and agronomists, as well as professionals in crop-related careers.

Once your team registers for the event, you will be provided information on how to prepare for the event so the sooner you register, the sooner you can start planning and preparing as a team. The top teams will have the opportunity to represent Minnesota at the national Crop Scouting Event in Iowa this year. Prizes will also be awarded to the top four teams.

Hope to see you July 29th! For questions, contact Brian McNeill at
