Three 4-H’ers head to 2020 MN YMCA; Model Assembly

Approximately 1,600 youth grades 8-12 from across the state will be filling the Minnesota State Capitol and Minneapolis Hilton January 9-12. Itasca County 4-H will have three delegates attending this year’s Assembly.

Katelyn D., Taylor T., and Corrina K. are members of the Itasca County Youth in Government 4-H Club. This club has been meeting twice a month since October and is led by Extension Educator, Courtney Johnson. The goal of the club is for youth to learn about state government through hands-on learning activities and participate in Model Assembly.

In November youth registered for the MN YMCA Youth in Government; Model Assembly. Each youth had to choose a track for the event; Judicial, Legislative, Executive, Lobbyists, and Press Core. Corrina K. and Katelyn D. selected the Legislative track, where they will be presenting bills that they have authored. Katelyn D. accepted an additional leadership role as she was also appointed as the Clerk of the Humphrey House. Taylor T. chose the Judicial track where she will defend a court case, she wrote both as the appellant and respondent. She will also have multiple opportunities to serve as a Supreme Court Justice.

During the club meetings leading up to Model Assembly, youth learn about the process of state government, community needs, public speaking and more through hands-on learning activities. Youth during both club time and on their own time, have been working on their assignments for Youth in Government in their respective tracks.

This is the second year that youth from Itasca County 4-H have participated. Funds for youth to attend were made available through a variety of grants including from; Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation, Northland Foundation and YMCA Youth in Government.

Please wish our Itasca County 4-H Delegates your best!
